Don’t call me “Mrs” !

People always try to assume things,
because they expect in life, certain ways.
For example, if I take in some photos, they write “Mrs” before I can say

Err, Miss or Ms please, if you don’t mind.
Then I think how dare they assume.
Not everyone wants to be married,
so why did they have to presume

that I fall into the category
of “Mrs” in their eyes.
Sometimes I just answer “Yes”,
Because it is easier telling them lies.

 They’ve obviously come to imagine
that every woman they serve
is married, or tied to a man in some way,
and they never try to reserve

the right to ask in a friendly, kind manner,
“Is it Mrs, Miss or Ms?”
To them, if you’re female, over an age,
then you’re married; else you’ve missed

the boat in some way, and you’re on the shelf.
Then they stare at you as if to say,
“Sad no man would have you”,
and I feel this isn’t okay.

I am not married; I have my own life,
I don’t need a man, so what?
Today, it is okay to be single and free,

And I’ve a better life than you’ve got!
